“I’ve always been a huge fan of screwball comedies of the ’20’s and ’30’s — the ones featuring bootleggers and playboys and dowagers and chorus girls. So when the Gershwin estate approached me about writing NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT, I jumped at the chance and set about to put a modern twist on these classic comic archetypes. I suppose I wanted to recapture the past in all its toe-tapping glory while making today’s audiences laugh out loud in the process.
I also wanted to make modern audiences hear the genius of the Gershwins in unexpected ways. So “Someone to Watch Over Me,” which is usually sung by a dewy-eyed ingénue, is now sung by a dewey-eyed ingénue dressed as a rum runner and brandishing a rifle. And as in all those golden-era shows, the boys do get the girls, but here the girls wind up with all of the power.
NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT is a new Gershwin musical about all the good things in life — music and laughter and falling in love. Every character in the show learns to find his or her joy, and I hope audiences do the same.”
